Occupation of the Galleries of Itajaí 2020
“Tombamento” is a series of works that was developed from the experience at the W. Artistic residency in Ribeirão Preto, under the guidance of the artist Elcio Miazaki.
Exploring the city, I observed old buildings, some built at the beginning of the sec. XX, with the date embossed on the facade. I obtain a photographic record of the houses and buildings on a Sunday morning, when properties in the process of becoming listed, without surveillance, are illegally destroyed.
The preservation of a property is an act of recognition of its historical, artistic or cultural value. The disappearance of this means the erasure of a memory and enhances the absence of a story that relates to the local community. The images captured that Sunday are printed and with a stylus the old building is cut out and eliminated, leaving the space empty.
As an act of reconstruction, I transfer the contours of the houses to the wall of the exhibition space using string and black, outlining the silhouette of the eliminated building, insinuating its presence as a subtle reminder of its existence.
